# HVAC Projects Need Both: Design Knowledge and Field Experience

There is a point on many renovation projects where the drawings stop being the full story

We saw this firsthand early. On paper, the HVAC approach was developed and the project was moving forward. But once the design had to work against the actual existing conditions, several assumptions started to fall apart.

Not because the engineering principles were wrong.

Because the building did not behave like the drawing.

THE PROJECT REALITY is, Existing buildings are full of conditions that are difficult to capture from plans alone.

Actual routing differs from record drawings. Available space disappears once everything above the ceiling is considered. Access that looks reasonable in plan view becomes difficult in the field. Existing systems have been modified over the years. Installation sequences that work on paper clash with ongoing operations or other trades.

This is where strong theoretical and design knowledge is essential—but not sufficient by itself.

Field experience adds a different layer of judgment:

> Can we actually build this? How do we get it in? What has to come first? Where will the installer struggle? Which assumption needs to be verified before fabrication or procurement?

## WHY IT GETS MISSED?

Design teams and field teams often work in different environments.

One is focused on calculations, codes, system performance, documentation, and design intent. The other deals with tolerances, access, existing conditions, sequencing, fabrication, and installation every day.

Neither perspective replaces the other.

The risk appears in the gap between them.

## THE PRACTICAL CONTROL AT AGE?

On existing-building projects, we like to test a few things before the design gets too far:

- Which design assumptions depend on existing conditions that have not been field-verified?
- Have critical routes, access points, connection locations, and equipment clearances been checked against what is actually there?
- Has someone with installation experience challenged the proposed sequence and buildability?
- Are those findings incorporated early enough to affect design, scope, procurement, and pricing—not after the job is already bought?

The real asset is not choosing between engineering knowledge and field experience. It is knowing how to work between both worlds.

That is also where AGE intentionally operates.

Our goal is to bring design thinking and field experience into the same conversation early—so that what gets engineered, scoped, priced, and procured has already been challenged against the reality of how it will actually get built.

The earlier field experience enters the project, the cheaper it is to change an assumption.

We are curious, in which part on your projects comes the field experience in the project?
